My Diagnosis explores the navigation of mental health challenges, complexity of individual and collective change, and vibrancy of human life. With “Look,” a new beginning is posited as fruitful only after looking to and learning from the past; through an honest examination of history, a more promising future may be imagined. Thus, the title track, “My Diagnosis,” represents the pain and joy of a scarred rebirth, fluid remoulding, and vulnerable reassertion. This redefinition of self and the world is, as represented by “Elemental,” vital to countering a culture that rewards the typical and status quo while simultaneously devaluing and pathologizing the atypical, creative, and diverse; just as the classical elements attempted to explain the material, the first and most essential principle here is survival. In turn, through both active resistance and sustained persistence, dark winters may become “Night Less” summers of dreams and energy, action and rest. If diagnoses are reimagined as challenges not necessarily to be overcome, but instead to be absorbed, accepted, and respected by the individual within the collective, then My Diagnosis — as an EP — refers to the resolve, simply and courageously, to be.
